Asthma and Allergy

I have Asthma that manifests solely in a cough. I never struggle to get breath and I do not generally wheeze. The most frequent trigger for the asthma is intense exercise. The most difficult trigger is when I have a cold, which leads to coughing, which leads to more coughing.

When cough becomes present, I can use Bromide and Albuterol inhalers to get it under control. I generally use a nebulizer for these. If the cough becomes persistent I treat it with a burst of prednisone.

I now take a bioligic drug Xolair by monthly injection to prevent the need for extensive prednisone. This started in August 2022 and has been successful through November 2022. One probable episode after a cold was avoided.

I have a variety of allergies which are well controlled through routine allergy injections.

Medical History

In addition to the Asthma, I have high blood pressure which is generally controlled by medication.

My cholesterol is absurdly low, a gift of DNA.

I take the simvastatin for C-reactive protein, but as much for an un-evidenced belief that statins are probably good for everyone.

I had a tonsillectomy as a child.

I had an adult circumcision in my mid 40's to deal with a troublesome foreskin.

The start of blood pressure medicine also brought on (or coincided with) erectile disfunction. Viagra and Cialis deal with this quite nicely.

FAMILY HISTORY

My brother has had both kidney cancer and prostate cancer.

My mother suffered from a malignant brain tumor, found only during autopsy. She died at 91.

My father had Alzheimers. He died at 91.

My maternal grandfather had type 2 diabetes. He had several strokes and died of a stroke at 76.

My fraternal grandmother had Alzheimers. She died in her early 80s.

My fraternal grandfather had heart issues and died of a heart attack at 80.

My maternal grandmother died at 98.
